Weekend Getaway in Fredericksburg, TX

Weekend Getaway in Fredericksburg, TX

If you’re in Central Texas and get the urge for German food, wine, and some nice hiking trails, you’ll want to check out Fredericksburg. It’s about an hour away from San Antonio, but well worth the drive. I made numerous day trips while living in SA, but the best way to experience it is to make a full weekend trip.

What to See & Do

-Hike Enchanted Rock. If you’re looking for an easy hike with some beautiful views in central Texas, Enchanted Rock is the place to visit. You’ll need to arrive early and bring cash, as there is a small entrance fee and the park closes when it reaches full capacity. I’ve had a few times where I was turned away due to it already being full. While some of the area is pet friendly, the main hiking trails are not; this is due to it being too steep and dangerous for pets.

-Check out one of the many wineries or breweries. Most of the wineries actually have small wine bars on the strip on Main Street, however, I definitely recommend visiting the actually vineyards for a better experience (and photo op!). Most of the wineries are off of the main highway to the east of Fredericksburg and you can usually find tours that will take you winery hopping so you don’t have to worry about finding a DD. A few of my favorites are Barons Creek Vineyard, Altstadt Brewery, Signor Vineyards, and Das Peach Haus.

-Visit a flower farm. You can visit Wild Seed Farms to see fields of wildflowers, lavender, poppies, pumpkins and more. They also offer times where you can go and cut your own bouquet.

-Pick you own peaches or strawberries. There are a few orchards, such as Jenschke Orchards, where you can pay to pick your own basket of peaches and strawberries. They also sell pumpkins and Christmas trees during the Fall/Winter months.

-Watch a horse race in July. During the month of July they typically have horse racing at the county fairgrounds.

-Visit the farmers market. If you’re looking for fresh food, there’s no better place than the Fredericksburg Farmers market. They sell fresh produce from the local farms, fresh meat, local wine, antiques, and more.

-Attend Oktoberfest. It’s no surprise that Fredericksburg knows how to throw an authentic Oktoberfest similar to what you would find in Germany. Dress in traditional German clothing and grab some beers and German food to celebrate.

-Shop an Amish market. Fredericksburg is home to the Amish Furniture Market where you can buy top quality hand crafted wood furniture and some food products such as jams, butter, and cheese.

Where to Eat

On the Main Street strip you’ll find plenty of restaurants and beer gardens with authentic German food, however, if you’re in the mood for something else, try one of these:

-Sunset Grill. If you want some good breakfast, this is your place. They have Hawaiian Macadamia pancakes, benedict’s, and more. Plus, you’ll be able to find Blood Mary’s to go with your food.

-Tubby’s Icehouse. Here you’ll find Tex-Mex, burgers, and plenty of ice cold beer or frozen drinks.

-Woerner Warehouse. If you’re in the mood for some top notch pizza or sandwiches, this is your place.

-Backwoods BBQ. While the restaurant lacks in aesthetics/display, they have some pretty great Texas BBQ.

-August E’s. If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience this will be your place; note, this is definitely more about presentation and experience rather than quantity.

Where to Stay

There are a few hotels and plenty of nice AirBnBs, but if you’re looking for a unique experience check out one of these amazing options. I’m truly upset I didn’t know about them until after I moved.

-Rent an A-Frame Cottage. The A-Frame Ranch features 2 beautiful cabins on a 17-acre ranch. Each cabin features floor to ceiling windows, a patio with a small pool & fire pit, and can fit 4-8 people.

-Stay in a beautiful Treehouse. At the HoneyTree Farm you can rent a beautiful treehouse cottage with beautiful interior, all the amenities, and a rooftop deck complete with a hammock and loveseat.

-Go Glamping. At Butterfly Creek you can rent a beautiful tent complete with a bed, private bathroom and shower (with hot water), and your own private stock tank pool.
